Literacy
Project in Bolivia

Sucre,
Bolivia

The main
goal of the project is to create and maintain youth lending libraries
and the use of reading programs to assess and ensure their effectiveness.
Furthermore, a "read-on-site" library was created as part of the project
for the use of the children of Humboldt School (1000 students from Grades
1 to 12), Sucre, Bolivia, using accelerated reader program (reading
management program).

Schools
in the USA helped by sponsoring activities to buy books in English and
Spanish and computer software for schools in Bolivia. In the country,
parents were involved in the program and encouraged to read with their
children, teach the responsibility for lent books and become familiar
with the technology involved. The faculty and administration were instructed
on the use of library and the reading program and a librairian was trained
to staff the new library.

In
May 1996, linguist Ms. Llobet and librarian Ms. Feaman travelled throughout
Bolivia visiting schools and meeting with government officials. Their
objective was to assess the feasibility of opening the first lending
library in the country. The first one to be established was at Humboldt
school in Sucre, in 1997.
