Basic Education

Sultanate of Oman

By adopting Basic Education as the fundamental stage in its general education system, the Sultanate of Oman is taking a step forward in qualitative educational development. Educational reform in Oman has gone through the unification of the primary stages into one known as Basic Education, replanned according to future needs (including manpower needs). The reform encompassed the whole Basic Education curriculum, with all its constituent parts, and included the introduction of co-educational school in the primary stage in response to modern needs, and an update of teaching methods.

Based on the result of various research studies conducted on the different aspects of learning-teaching process, the project is an effort to plan the Basic Education subsystem in a holistic view.
As a response to modern needs, the reform included the introduction of new subjects and an update of teaching methods.
One important point of this reform is the unification of Education for boys and girls, based on the premise that they all are fellow citizens of one society, bound by common aims and ambitions, requiring a common core of education and culture, and ensuring solidarity in society according to Arab-Islamic identity; another one is the feminisation of the staff.
Other dimensions of the project are that it defined Basic Education as a flexible education in terms of processes and outcomes, preparing the learner to continue to the next stage of his/her education, or to have adequate training for work according to his/her interests and capacities.

The Sultanate of Oman would take a step forward in qualitative educational development by adopting Basic Education and following the local, regional and international developments taking place in all spheres of life.
