The Environmental Education Television Project for China - EETPC -

China

The Environmental Education Television Project for China (EETPC) is a civil society effort to assist Chinese Environmentalists in their enormous task for the protection of nature. It aims to increase the effectiveness of environmental awareness, conservation and protection efforts by producing films mainly for young people and by creating strong synergistic alliances. This Television Trust for Environment - (TVE) - project was begun by volonteers and inspired by members of the NGO Friends of Nature and an Ambassador of the European Commission.

In addition to bringing together NGOs, International Institutions, Chinese Governmental Organisations and concerned individuals, the project organizes the work in the country. EETPC has created eight regional distribution centres in provincial or local environmental protection offices. The project provides materiels and services to people and pupils in schools (it brought more than 220 environmental films ; 110 in Chinese language versions have been made to date). The EETPC films are being distributed via cassettes to schools, universities, environmental groups and directly to gouvernmental organisations such as the Governors of all the provinces of China and the mayors of all the major cities. It creates activities and helps to initiate television programmes with Chinese units (EETPC films have been broadcast throughout China and are reaching 100 million of viewers on many different networks and many different shows. The EETPC has been directly responsible for the creation of two new environmental programmes on Chinese television and one of them, "BTV Green Earth", is a programme for children on Beijing television).

The designers of the project think that a way to stimulate the activities in the field of nature conservation of is to join all the actors and make them work together. The EETPC focuses on the importance of media in the information campaign and the key-role of young people (future generations) and the community. In a way, it increases the capacity and competence among China's environmental media professionals.
