After-School Programs: Keeping Children Safe and Smart

New York City, NY, USA

The After-School Programs are programs designed to enrich the lives of children and help their parents, with the goal of making in-school after-school programs a public responsibility. The After School Corporation (TAS) is supporting after-school programs located in public schools and open to all students enrolled in those schools.

These programs are operated by community-based organizations in collaboration with the school and run from 3 PM to 6 PM every day when schools are open.
During Fall 2000, TASC funded 135 quality after-school programs in New York City. These programs included educational components such as academics, arts, technology, athletics, thematic learning, community service learning, etc. They all ensure that children are receiving sufficient food, time to eat and to socialize with adults.

Underlying this initiative is the recognition that fundamental changes are taking place in the American family, particularly the growth of single parent households, and the recognition that the majority of students - regardless of their academic standing - need a broader range of educational experiences and increased learning time.
The TASC's group has taken into account that: approximately 75% of school age children have mothers in the workforce and that juvenile delinquency increased in the 90's because of the decreasing presence of adult supervision during after-school time. Educators, parents and employers have come to believe that the traditional 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM school day fails to provide students with the skills and knowledge they need to compete successfully for jobs in the 21st century's global economy.
