Curriculum Development

Curriculum is a crucial component of any educational process. The IBE works to strengthen the competencies for the management of curriculum development among decision makers, specialists, researchers and practitioners at international, regional and national levels. All activities are orientated towards capacity building and include :

• Organizing training activities and providing technical advice to strengthen capacities in critical areas of curriculum design, planning and renewal

• Facilitating regional networking and exchange among experts from national curriculum departments

• Promoting action-research activities addressing curriculum development in post-conflict and transition countries

• Developing modules, training tools and resource materials in curriculum policy-making and development

• Working towards the constitution of a Global Curriculum Network representing a worldwide community of practitioners devoted to curriculum development

The IBE also provides advisory services or cooperation/technical assistance to UNESCO Member States, provinces and local governments. These services, provided upon request, aim to support curriculum development processes. Examples are: Gulf State projects, Afghanistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

An important component of curriculum development is having resources and research findings for the construction of the most appropriate curricula. The IBE's Resource Bank and Observatory of Trends provide relevant and timely data on a wide range of educational issues.

• Tunisia, UNESCO and the African Development Bank organized a two-day intensive training on education in fragile states. (2007)

• Mauritius curriculum development workshop focusing on the design and implementation of an improved primary school curriculum, including textbooks. (2006)
  
• A UNESCO workshop which identified the organization's level of capacity of intervention in the Sudanese post-conflict resolution and educational restructuring process. (2006)
• An international colloquium held in Romainia aimed at analysing current and future challenges facing international curriculum development. (2006)
• The IBE's role during the Iraqi conference on the establishment of a new educational system in the country. (2005)
