Past and Current COP activities on competency-based approaches

- © UNESCO-IBE
Mainly through the Community of Practice (COP) in Curriculum Development, the IBE has and is currently implementing several activities and projects in order to develop, support and promote competency-based approaches worldwide, including:
- A co-operation agreement with CECC (Coordinación Educativa y Cultural Centroamericana) is aimed at designing and implementing programmes, projects and activities to aid Central American countries in matters of curricular development;
- Assisting the Guatemalan government in carrying out a pilot project that aims to develop and evaluate competencies at the classroom level through learning situations;
- Organising two multilingual online Forums (November 2005 and November 2006) open to all members of the COP. The objective was to provide a plural, open and constructive space for the inter-regional sharing of visions and experiences of competency-based curriculum change and development. For further information please visit the archived Forums;
- The IBE’s quarterly review of comparative education in “Prospects” n° 142 presents an open file entitled “Curriculum Change and Competency-Based Approaches: A worldwide Perspective”. The publication contains articles from several members of the COP as well as an analysis of the second E-Forum on competency-based approaches (Forum 2006). For further information please see the IBE’s publications;
- In co-operation with the Belgian Institute BIEF, the IBE is currently pursuing a project to create an international databank of learning situations. The objective is to make it accessible on the internet to national teams in charge of designing and implementing processes of competency-based curriculum change and development;
- IBE staff participated as public speakers in several workshops, forums and colloquiums to present their view on competency-based approaches to a large public. For further information, please see our COP activities.
