Nordic European Region

Focal Point: Finnish National Board of Education

Representatives:

Ms. Irmeli Halinen (Head of National Curriculum Unit)

Ms. Ritva Järvinen (Head of the Development Unit in General Education)

In February 2007, the IBE and the Finnish National Board signed a co-operation agreement. Its objectives include:

  • Disseminating the proposal of the COP amongst the public sector, universities, NGOs, foundations and other relevant institutions working on education and curriculum development in the Nordic countries;
  • Through the IBE Website and on-line activities such as E-forums, animating and supporting the sharing and discussion of visions, strategies, experiences and practices around Inclusive Education in the Nordic countries.

The Finnish National Board of Education co-ordinated the Nordic Europe Regional Workshop on Inclusive Education, held in Helsinki (Finland) on 7-8 March 2008. It prepared a discussion document for the workshop, focusing on the analysis of key factors and dimensions (communitarian, institutional, policy, curricular, pedagogical and teaching, among others) that can explain the advances of the Nordic region in carrying out a broadened concept of Inclusive Education. The document also considers how these factors can become solid points of reference for other regions. The Focal Point continues to be involved in the follow-up activities of the 48th session of the International Conference on Education (ICE 2008, Geneva).
