Workshop for developing a short version of the new Curriculum Framkework in Afghanistan

November 2003

Wednesday, 19 and Thursday, 20 November 2003, a two-day workshop was organised at the Ministry of Education with 25 participants, representatives of the Compilation and Translation Department (Curriculum Unit) and the Teacher Training Department, based on input materials elaborated by Mrs. Dakmara Georgescu, IBE-UNESCO consultant.

The aim of the workshop was to analyse best solutions for developing a short version of the new curriculum framework, which should take the shape of a brochure or pamphlet, and should be widely distributed all over the country. While teachers might be reluctant to read a large document such as the new Curriculum Framework, a short, concise version of the framework could be helpful for explaining the main directions for change in the present curriculum developed by the new education authorities after the fall of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan .

Participants have made several important suggestions, which will be taken into consideration for finalising the short version of the new Curriculum Framework:

  • The text should be as concise and appealing as possible.
  • Difficult or new concepts, such as learner-centred approaches, should be explained by using appropriate examples.
  • The principles of the new curriculum should be also illustrated with the help of some concrete examples.
  • The size and ton of the document should be as user-friendly as possible.
