Curriculum development for social inclusion in Baltic Sea States (Vilnius, Lithuania, 5-8 December 2001)

The efficiency with which formal education systems ensure their traditional function of integration and social cohesion is increasingly being called into question. Across the world, strains on social cohesion are being seen through growing patterns of social exclusion; including increasing social deprivation, isolation, and vulnerability, unemployment, racism and xenophobia.

 

As a result, there is a growing focus on curricula reform and skills development to strengthen social inclusion based on principles of equality, justice, pluralism, respect for life and human dignity of all. Curricula reform for the reinforcement of life skills is one possible educational response in the Baltic Sea region.
