Adapting curricula and the content of education to new situations and ongoing changes in the world is part of a continuous process for all countries of the region. The emerging global information society, the globalized economy and environmental challenges are only some of the issues that need to be addressed through an updated and competency-based curriculum. With the assistance of the Arab Bureau of Education for the Gulf States (ABEGS), the countries of the region have expressed their interest in coordinating and integrating their efforts in order to develop and unify educational methodologies, pedagogy and school curricula consistent with the spirit of Islam and the traditional values of the region.
Within this regional context, the seminar organized in Muscat raised issues such as the integration and development of new information and communication technologies, the reduction of the discrepancy between curriculum design and implementation, the introduction of new subjects dealing with life-long learning, the integration of competency-based learning elements and the development of new tools for assessment and evaluation.
