Born in October 1915 in Johannesburg (South Africa), Leo R. Fernig obtained a B.A. (1937) and an M.A. (1939) from the University College of Natal (Durban, South Africa). He started his career at UNESCO in August 1948 as Programme Specialist in the Education Sector. During his career, Mr Fernig occupied several senior positions within the Education Sector, such as Chief of Operational Services (1966-1967), or Director of the Department for the Advancement of Education (1967-1970). In 1970, he was appointed Director of the International Bureau of Education in Geneva, until 1974, when he was transferred to the position of Assistant Director-General for Education ad interim. He retired in December 1976. Mr Fernig is the author of numerous articles in education journals. He died in 1999.
