Addressing gender issues and promoting gender equality (Pilot testing of teacher training modules in Viet Nam)

Do Son, Viet Nam, 2-5 November 2010 Given the crucial importance of teachers, as duty bearers, in implementing the recently-adopted  laws on Gender Equality (GE) in Viet Nam, UNESCO IBE conducted a three-day pilot testing workshop of the draft Teacher Training Modules (TTM) that were developed in the context of the Programme on “National Textbook review and analysis from a gender perspective, including piloting teacher-training programmes to incorporate Gender Equality issues in line with the Law on Gender Equality and the Law on Domestic Violence Prevention and Control (United Nations Joint Programme activity 1.3.15). In the context of the Programme, UNESCO Hanoi Office with the technical assistance of UNESCO IBE, and the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) work cooperatively towards incorporating gender issues and promoting GE in and through teacher training courses at primary and secondary levels. The TTM are conceived as a comprehensive, generic resource package which teacher training institutions may customize for specific pre-and in-service trainees, local contexts and needs. Following the recommendations of a workshop held in Hoa Binh in May 2010 with relevant Vietnamese stakeholders, the TTM cover a wide range of issues, such as

  • "Conceptual and normative framework for GE" (Module 1);
  • "Using gender lenses for curriculum and textbooks, teaching and learning, and assessment" (Module 2);
  • "Involving stakeholders and mobilizing resources" (Module 3);  and
  • "Monitoring and Evaluation" (Module 4).

It is UNESCO’s intention that after pilot testing the TTM, a finalized version of the modules be presented to MOET for the rolling-out of enhanced teacher training courses that effectively incorporate gender issues and promote GE based on the views and recommendations of Vietnamese stakeholders.
