Educational Transformation in Uruguay

18.06.2012

Details

In Uruguay, educational debate and transformation are currently taking place. The Uruguayan government is aiming to construct an educational agenda that supports profound institutional and curriculum changes in the educational system. In this context and within the framework of United Nations “Delivering as One” (UNDP, UNICEF, UNFPA and UNESCO), the Uruguayan Ministry of Education and Culture has requested the UN support to develop the “Country Programme [Programa País] 2012-2014” to develop the basis of a long-term education and curricular agreement engaging diverse stakeholders. The country programme is embedded in the “National Agreement on Education” (February 2012) and aims to promote, among other issues, the development of the school-based curriculum and Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in middle and tertiary education. The IBE is requested to support the design of this initiative which is aligned with the IBE’s strategy as a Centre of Excellence. One of the IBE’s core objectives is to support member states through a vision and framework of medium and long term action. IBE also promotes knowledge production and dissemination, evidence-based political dialogue and development of institutional and curriculum capabilities with an international comparative perspective.  This programme could be a pilot for Latin America to share visions and practices concerning the curriculum processes as well as the results. It goes hand-in-hand with the IBE’s global mandate of articulating actions at the interregional, regional and national levels. The first stage of this process includes a preparatory meeting held in Montevideo in late June. Different government actors, as well as staff of the United Nations will analyze the needs of the country and modalities of support. For more information:
