Exploring Partnerships for Quality Curriculum in Latin American and the Caribbean

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has invited the International Bureau of Education (IBE) to present information on the Postgraduate Diploma in Curriculum Design and Development (Diploma) in order to learn more about ways of supporting the programme. As the leading source of development financing in Latin America and the Caribbean, the IDB seeks to eliminate poverty and inequality, and promotes sustainable economic growth.

Since 2010, the IBE has contributed to achieving quality education for all in the region through organizing the Diploma programme on an annual basis. To date, 309 specialists have been trained globally, including 138 participants from Latin America and the Caribbean. Programme participants, who represent a range of stakeholders in the education system, namely policy-makers, planners, curriculum developers, teacher trainers, quality assurance officers and researchers, have emphasized the Diploma’s value in developing their professional expertise. Further, many graduates of the programme have gone on to lead educational reform initiatives in their respective countries such as Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Colombia. The success of the Diploma programme has strengthened IBE’s progress in becoming a Centre of Excellence (COE) in curriculum-related matters by combining a global, regional and national approach to implementing comprehensive, long-term capacity-development activities.

Registration is currently underway for the fifth edition of the Diploma which will commence with a Face-to-Face intensive component from the 1st to the 12th of September 2014 at Catholic University of Uruguay in Montevideo. The training will then continue with 30 weeks of distance learning. The Latin America and Caribbean Diploma is implemented by the IBE, Catholic University of Uruguay (UCU), and UNESCO’s regional bureau (OREALC). A similar program is offered in the Africa region each year. The Diploma is made possible with the generous support of the UNESCO-Hamdan bin Rashid Al-Maktoum Prize for Outstanding Practice and Performance in Enhancing the Effectiveness of Teachers.
