IBE and UNESCO jointly develop a guide for teacher education curriculum framework

Curriculum and teacher policies affect teaching and learning processes and outcomes. Standardizing teacher qualifications and harmonizing teacher training programs require that national curriculum and teacher policies are synchronized and that teacher training is in line with curriculum reforms. The IBE is collaborating with UNESCO’s Division of Teaching, Learning and Content (ED/TLC) to coordinate the production of a “Guide for Developing and Implementing a Teacher Education Curriculum Framework”.

This Guide will provide fundamental concepts relating to curriculum framework and through a range of training activities, exploring:

  • The ways curriculum framework concepts can be applied to teacher education;
  • the benefits that may arise from such a process; and
  • the process of developing a curriculum framework for teacher education. A draft of the Guide has been completed and peer-reviewed.

It will undergo an external review by 15 selected international experts (teacher educators, curriculum experts, policy makers and UNESCO staff) at a meeting that will be held at UNESCO headquarters from 21 to 23 October 2015. Once finalised and released, the Guide will be part of the IBE series of “Training Tools for Curriculum Development”, which aim to strengthen the capacities of actors involved in the development and provision of quality education. It may also be used as a “stand-alone” training tool for countries wishing to explore the concepts of a curriculum framework and to improve teacher education through the application of this “framework” approach.
