The Education for All initiative (EFA, 2000-2015) and United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD, 2005-2014) have 3 to 4 years to meet their goals. Yet, there remains an overwhelming need to embed EFA and ESD concepts firmly into school curricula and to develop appropriate pedagogies, lesson plans and teaching materials.
UNESCO Bangkok is implementing a project on Reorienting Quality Teacher Education towards EFA and ESD, which aims to enhance the capacity of teacher educators and teachers to design and integrate ESD and EFA contents into their curricula and teaching materials. This project is supported by the Japanese Funds-in-Trust and carried out in partnership with UNESCO-IBE, UNESCO Cluster Offices in Asia and the Pacific, Ministries of Education, National Commissions for UNESCO, universities, and national teacher training institutes.
A national capacity-building workshop will be held in the Philippines from 25 to 1 April 2011 in Quezon City. The workshop will feature presentations by experts from the region and UNESCO constituencies, as well as group work focused on six ESD and EFA thematic issues: natural disaster preparedness, intercultural understanding, environmental protection, gender sensitization, HIV/AIDS and education for international understanding. During the five-day workshop, participants will discuss and share their knowledge and good practices in ESD.
The IBE’s training modules on environmental education, natural-disaster risk education, climate change and gender sensitization, as well as the Resource Rack for Curriculum Development are expected to be utilized in country activities, aligned to the local situation and context.
