The IBE-UNESCO participates in a series of meetings on Inclusive Education in South Africa

The IBE-UNESCO joins the Regional Roundtable on Inclusive Education in the African context as well as the annual African Disability Rights Conference (5-7 November) in Pretoria, South Africa.

From 5 to 7 November 2018, the IBE-UNESCO is joining other regional and international educational stakeholders for a series of events on Inclusive Education, in Pretoria, South Africa organized by the Centre for Human Rights of the University of Pretoria in partnerships with the Open Society Foundations.

In particular, the IBE-UNESCO took part in the “Regional Roundtable: Inclusive education in the African context and Salamanca 25+ Consultation” by presenting the evolving paradigm shift on inclusive education and highlighting UNESCO’s intellectual leadership and main activities in this area. Furthermore, in a second session the IBE-UNESCO introduced UNESCO’s “International Education Forum Salamanca +25”, which is organized by UNESCO’s Section of Education for Inclusion and Gender Equality in partnership with Open Society Foundations, and scheduled for June 2019.

At the roundtable, about 35 experts working in different areas of inclusive education from several African countries—namely Cameroon, Kenya, Malawi, South Africa and Uganda—and organizations such as EENET, OSF, UNICEF, Light for the World and the African Organization for Standardization, among others, convened to share experiences as well as reflect and discuss the regional priorities on inclusive education. From the discussion emerged that among the different stakeholders there are synergies with regards to the understanding of inclusive education and what an inclusive education system should look like. Indeed, the discussion made it clear that in order to deal with the barriers to inclusion, there is a need to move beyond access and focus more on achieving good quality learning through a good curriculum delivery, which implies having trained teachers as well as putting in place systems of multisector collaboration, among others.

The roundtable was followed by the annual African Disability Rights Conference, entitled “Are we learning together? Addressing barriers to inclusive education in the African region”. During this two-day event, participants from the region are sharing local, national and cross-regional experiences on inclusive education policies, practices and programmes. In addition, the participants are offered the opportunity to participate in Capacity-building Workshops encompassing a variety of topics, such as the implementation of inclusive education in resource-scarce settings, and the development of effective inclusive education teacher training.
