Kenya extends Internet by balloon to facilitate on-line education

In response to COVID-19, the Kenyan government, supported by companies such as Google and Airtel Kenya have extended various digital learning platforms and tools which will allow teachers, learners and their parents to telecommunicate and work remotely during the Covid19 quarantine.

The ‘Loon project’ aims to provide Internet access to everyone, including the most remote areas. The project uses balloons containing 4G devices powered by solar panels that can emit 4G signals over a large area. The ‘Loon balloons’ will help address a digital gap, which generates geographical inequalities.

Airtel Kenya is also offering free access to the internet. This service will remain available until schools and universities reopen.
