Producing teacher training tools to improve reading and writing outcomes in Niger

The UNESCO International Bureau of Education’s (IBE-UNESCO) project, Learning outcomes in early grades: integration of curriculum, teaching, learning materials and assessment, sponsored by the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), begins its second year with a capacity building workshop in Niamey (Niger) from 12 to 16 January 2015.

The activity will gather representatives from several divisions of Niger’s Ministry of Education, deputy directors, head teachers, teacher trainers, pre-service teachers as well as researchers from the University of Geneva (UNIGE) and IBE-UNESCO curriculum specialists. Its main objective is to initiate the production of training modules aimed at teacher educators for the first three years of primary education and a guide for teaching reading/writing in the country, as part of the implementation of the new national curriculum.

This workshop is the first activity planned in the action plan developed by Niger’s national team, with UNESCO-IBE’s support, during the Regional Debate on the Teaching of Reading in Burkina Faso, Niger and Senegal held in Dakar in October 2014 and during which the elements to consider for effective reading and writing teaching practices were presented as well as the challenges to be addressed in a multilingual context to improve reading outcomes. This action plan 2015-2016 defines Niger’s priorities and is focused upon a main result: building the capacity of teachers and teacher trainers to improve teaching and learning to read.
