Regional debate on the teaching of reading in Burkina Faso, Niger and Senegal, and production of national plans of action to improve the outcomes of learning in reading

From 20 to 24th October, the UNESCO International Bureau of Education (UNESCO-IBE) will organize a regional workshop in the framework of the project financed by the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) “

Improving reading outcomes in the early years of primary school in Burkina Faso, Niger and Senegal”, and implemented with the ministries of education of the three countries involved in the project. This regional meeting entitled “Teaching and learning reading in multilingual contexts” is a key moment of the project and has a double objective. Firstly, participants will have the possibility of debating different models for the teaching of reading in multilingual contexts, as well as the elements that should be taken into account to efficiently teach reading and access to a written culture. This discussion will be based on the results of the

national and international diagnostic study conducted in partnership with the University of Geneva and in collaboration with researchers from the universities of Koudougou (Burkina Faso), University of Abdou Mounoumi (Niger) and University of Cheikh Anta Diop (Senegal). Secondly, the representatives of the ministries of education of Burkina Faso, Niger and Senegal will produce, according to their priorities and needs and while taking into account the results of the study, detailed national plans of action (2014-2016) for the improvement of the teaching of reading. The domains of intervention and the actors will be targeted, the upcoming activities detailed, and the necessary means for their implementation described.
