Details

Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, 20-24 April 2009 Initiated by the Kigali Call for Action, the UNESCO Basic Education Programme in Africa (BEAP) was established to develop partner-country capacities to expand and reform basic education, for an uninterrupted minimum duration of 9 years. The IBE is playing an active role in supporting BEAP, as the Programme focuses on enhanced equity and quality of basic education. After The Gambia, Ethiopia and Côte d'Ivoire, countries of the initial phase of the BEAP, Tanzania is the next country which, to its request, will benefit from this collaboration. The objectives of the BEAP Conference in Tanzania (20-23 April 2009) will be to bring together all key stakeholders of education to critically examine the current curriculum and curricular issues in Tanzania (in the African context), namely basic education provision and relevance within the framework of Vision 2025 and MKUKUTA Plan. Specifically, the conference will be mandated to:
  1. Launch BEAP in Tanzania;
  2. Discuss the Tanzanian education policies and current reforms;
  3. Identify challenges facing the education system in Tanzania;
  4. Share experiences on education and curriculum-related issues from selected countries in the sub-region;
  5. Conceptualize/clarify terminologies, including curriculum framework, assessment tool and competency-based education, education for sustainable development, etc.;
  6. Align BEAP objectives with the current MOEVT milestone and MKUKUTA;
  7. Discuss on going initiatives in education to avoid duplication of interventions/activities.

This meeting will gather representatives from: Rwanda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Seychelles, IBE, BREDA, UNESCO Dar Es Salaam, as well as development partners such as GTZ. The 24th of April will be devoted to discuss the future role of the Tanzanian Institute of Education (TIE) in curriculum research and training in the sub-region. For more information:
