Seth Spaulding

Seth Spaulding was Director of the IBE from 1983 to 1986. During this period, the IBE moved from the Palais Wilson to the new building where it is now located. Dr. Spaulding supervised the final design of the new building and organized the dedication ceremony that was attended by the Director General of UNESCO, the IBE Council and members of the diplomatic community. During his tenure, the IBE newsletter, Educational Innovation and Information, was designed and training programs for educational documentalists initiated. Dr. Spaulding, some years earlier, was an education department director at UNESCO in Paris and at that time the journal Prospects was begun within his department. That journal is now edited and managed at the IBE.

During his tenure, the United States withdrew from UNESCO and Dr. Spaulding decided to return to his professorship at the University of Pittsburgh in the United States. Over the years, he has continued to support UNESCO through Board membership with Americans for UNESCO, an organization that has kept the vision of UNESCO alive in the US and which may have influenced the US decision to re-join UNESCO in the early 2000’s. He has also done many consultancies for UNESCO projects and programs in countries in every region and has taught courses on UNESCO as part of his work at the University of Pittsburgh.
