Curriculum reform, design, and implementation in the Mediterranean
Meeting for the launching of the IBE-MED Network
22-26 November 1999, Valletta, Malta
On the occasion of the ‘Pilot Intensive Sub-Regional Course on Curriculum Development’ held at the IBE in September 1998, a number of countries of the Mediterranean region discussed the possibility of establishing a sub-regional network for the management of curriculum change. A meeting was organized in November 2000 in Malta in order to lauch this Network and to discuss its operational modalities.
During the meeting, each delegation presented the current situation in its country regarding curriculum reform and the problems related to this issue. The participants identified 9 priority themes in which co-operation activities would be developed. For each theme a sub-group was established, under the direction of a co-ordinatior.
Throughout 2000/2001, only two of these groups have been active : (1) the group coordinated by Spain on the evaluation of reforms and (2) the one led by Israel on the teaching of science and technology.
The experience gained from the operation of the network confirmed a great need for exchange and a desire for co-operation on the part of the countries of the region, while however revealing some difficulties in developing interactive work on a long-term basis. More broadly, it has prompted a need to rethink the functions and mode of operation of all activities related to support for curriculum development. In the future, attention will be paid to co-ordination with existing educational networks.
