This special issue, by the guest editors Manzoor Ahmed and R. Govinda, focuses on important aspects of universal primary education in the four countries of South Asia with the largest populations: Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Pakistan.

The articles provide an overview of primary education in each country, including the contours of disparity and disadvantage, the policies and strategies adopted, as well as successes and constraints in pursuing these strategies. This issue might also help to orient future diagnoses and fruitful action in other regions.

PROSPECTS is UNESCO-IBE's Quarterly Review of Comparative Education.
