Mainly through the Community of Practice (COP) in Curriculum Development, IBE is implementing several activities and projects in order to develop, support and promote competency-based approaches worldwide:

  • A cooperation agreement between CECC (Coordinación Educativa y Cultural Centroamericana) and IBE aims to create an ad hoc group of representatives from these institutions to design and implement programs, projects and activities - especially in the domain of competency-based education - to advise and help Central American countries in matters of curricular development.

  • IBE assists the Guatemalan government in carrying out a pilot project that aims to develop and evaluate competencies at the classroom level through learning situations. This assistance is assured through proper IBE advising as well as by contracting educational experts such as the Belgian Institute BIEF.

  • IBE organized two multilingual online Forums (November 2005 and November 2006) open to all members of the COP with the objective to provide a plural, open and constructive space for the inter-regional sharing of visions and experiences of competency-based curriculum change and development. Fur further information please specific pages (Forum 2005, Forum 2006).

  • IBE’s quarterly review of comparative education “Prospects” n° 142 presents an open file entitled “Curriculum Change and Competency-Based Approaches: A worldwide Perspective”. The publication contains articles from several members of the COP as well as an analysis of the second E-Forum on competency-based approaches (see above). For further information please see the IBE’s publication website.

  • In cooperation with the Belgian Institute BIEF the IBE is currently elaborating a project on the creation of an international databank of learning situations with the objective to make it accessible on the internet to national teams in charge of designing and implementing processes of competency-based curriculum change and development.

  • IBE staff participated as public speakers in several workshops, forums and colloquiums to present their view on competency-based approaches to a large public. For further information please see Workshops.
