Lead innovation in curriculum and learning

The curriculum is one of the most effective tools for bridging the gap between education and development. However, there is little to no normative guidance on what constitutes a well-balanced responsive curriculum at different levels of education.

UNESCO-IBE sets the standards and guidelines for what must be regarded as quality curricula. If countries must benefit from the true development value of the curriculum, we must look beyond traditional conceptions, where the curriculum is viewed simply as a collection of syllabi, study plans, and textbooks. Instead, stakeholders must come to realize the more encompassing role of curriculum in supporting development through education. The IBE is a global intellectual leader in this regard, as we continuously promote and support policy and technical dialogue on a renewed understanding of the curriculum.

Our work with countries, therefore, involves deepening understanding and paradigm shifts in the curriculum by explicitly articulating the developmental value of curriculum to democratize learning and create lifelong opportunities for all, as mandated by Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4.

Our work also involves setting the norms and standards for what constitutes well-balanced curricula that could serve countries and their development needs. We are involved in the production, discussion, and validation of guidelines and tools needed to design, develop, and assess quality curricula.
