The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic wrought havoc on traditional educational systems worldwide, disrupting access to learning and highlighting existing disparities. However, amidst this crisis emerged a recognition of the pivotal role digital learning can play in shaping the future of education globally.

In response to this paradigm shift, UNESCO Member States took a decisive step in 2023 by proclaiming the 19th of March as the International Day for Digital Learning. This decision underscored the potential of high-quality and accessible digital education to mitigate educational challenges and foster inclusive, sustainable development.

In line with this commitment, as part of its Hybrid Education, Learning and Assessment (HELA) initiative, UNESCO-IBE published the HELA Reader, a comprehensive guide showcasing ongoing digital learning initiatives across the globe. With a focus on enhancing curriculum to foster democratic learning opportunities, the HELA Reader examines the integration of face-to-face and remote learning modalities. Through examination and synthesis of innovative practices worldwide, it lays the groundwork for transformative educational approaches.

UNESCO-IBE organized a webinar in February 2024 dedicated to exploring modalities and ways forward for digital learning in West Africa. Focusing on hybrid assessment in the region, the webinar facilitated discussions on contextualized approaches for digital learning environments.

The research report 'A Comparative Study on Hybrid Learning ' led by UNESCO-IBE examines the experiences of six countries in implementing hybrid learning models, offering valuable insights to shape future curriculum frameworks. By analysing and comparing diverse country case studies, it considers the potential application of hybrid learning methodologies in different circumstances.

Looking ahead, it is evident that digital learning will continue to evolve alongside educational advancements, paving the way for a more accessible and sustainable future. The International Day for Digital Learning serves as a timely reminder of our collective commitment to harnessing technology for the betterment of education, ensuring that no learner is left behind in the digital age.
